Mom and dad, what is your plan?

As a parent of a high school student, you already know that the college entrance process is difficult. Between figuring out what your teen wants, what you think is best, and what you can afford, there can be a lot to learn, process, and do. In addition, you have probably figured out that there is no instruction manual. My job is to help point you in the right direction and to help your high school student score as high as possible on his or her ACT.

If you have questions that you do not find the answer to on this page, just email me. If you are ready to sign up your student, just use the form at the bottom of this page.

How does the crash course work?

The one-day, four-hour crash course will be administered at the Hixson Campus of the Stuart Heights Baptist Church on March 10, 2012. Exact times are 10 am - noon (followed by an hour lunch break) and 1 pm - 3 pm, for a total of four hours of instruction. The fee is $100 and is due immediately before the course begins.

Your student will leave encouraged, excited, and confident that he or she can achieve a higher score than achieved before. I specialize in getting students an extra two to three points in a fun, fast-paced environment that focuses on practice problems, individualized feedback, as well as physical and mental strategies. Also included will be general test-taking strategies and specific strategies focusing on each of the five sections (English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and Writing).

Emphasis is placed on process of elimination, pacing, and patterns--all areas that are easily coachable and areas that provide positive results.

What do you need to do?

First, talk with your teen to determine a list of three or four schools with which you both would be comfortable. Remember to consider location, cost, environment, and academic rigor in your decision.

Once you have narrowed the list to three or four schools, check out each school's website to determine acceptance criteria and scholarship requirements. This should give you an idea of how much (if any) your student needs to improve on his or her ACT score to get into each school.

Having a target score is critical to knowing whether your student needs tutoring or not.

If the ACT score that your student has already achieved is not high enough either for the entrance requirements or for specific scholarships, fill out the form to the right to sign up for the next ACT prep crash course.

If you want your student to take the March 10 crash course, you have until March 8 to register. If you would like to register now, fill out the form at the bottom of this page.

About Jim

Jim Fleming started teaching high school students how to prepare for the ACT over 15 years ago (while still a senior in high school). While in school, Jim spent hundreds of hours tutoring classmates in a variety of subjects in both formal and informal settings.

During Jim's senior year in college, he began working for the Sylvan Learning Center in Chattanooga, TN. Accumulating over 2,000 hours of tutoring experience at Sylvan, Jim managed the math, study skills, speed reading, SAT, and ACT programs, and oversaw the training of dozens of instructors.

After leaving Sylvan, Jim joined TVA and has been there ever since. He continues to tutor high school students in math and ACT prep outside of TVA.

With over 3,000 hours of tutoring experience and a program developed through years of practice, Jim's passion is to come along side a student and fill in the knowledge gaps while maintaining an encouraging and positive environment.

Jim is married to his wife of ten years, Julie, and has two children. He is a member, Sunday school teacher, and deacon at Stuart Heights Baptist Church.

If you have more questions, you can email Jim. If you are ready to sign up your student, just use the form below.
